Free Range Eggs
Crack open one of our Free Range eggs and immediately you will see a difference. The yolk is firm, plump and bright yellow, bordering on orange, testifying of the high forage content in the diet. Seperate the egg and you will see just how different it is from the store bought fare you are used to.
We feed our birds a ration we grind and mix ourselves consisting of corn, oats, alfalfa and protein from peas and duckweed
. We also add freeze dried Icelandic kelp as a mineral supplement. No hormones, antibiotics, additives and no soy. To this is added the occasional bug, worm or other pasture critter as well as copious amounts of grass.
Pasture Maintenance
We use heritage chicken breeds, Rhode Island Red, (the original not the new "Production Red") Barred Rocks etc. because they not only produce a high quality egg, but for their value in pasture maintenance.
The job they do behind our cows spreading out the manure and eating the fly larvae is valuable enough that, even if they were all roosters, they would be worth having. We try to make everything we do here at Running Water Farms fit in with, and compliment, everything else. Nature is our example.
